Pay it Forward

by guera in Blogging on 16 January, 2008

I joined in Lightening´s Pay it Forward game, and my number came up to receive her gift of a post about my blog.

The Pay it Forward game has been going round blogs for a little while now and involves a blogger choosing (by various different methods) three people to give a gift to. Those people then choose three people to give a gift to as they “pay forward” the fun.

As Lightening was saying, the concept that you would make a kind gesture to someone without expecting something in return is so great, and pretty rare these days. I´ve been thinking over the last few days about what I have done in my life that illustrates this idea. I was having trouble thinking of an example of something “good” enough to put in this post, which makes it sound like I never do anything nice for people! I asked Rocky if he could think of an example when I´d been really kind and he said “well, you´re always kind, but this has to be something really extra specially kind“. Thanks! (I think it was a compliment, of sorts ;))

Anyway, I realised it doesn´t have to be something big, but maybe more importantly is the little ways in which you help people. The last few years I´ve done a fair bit of soul searching trying to decide “what I want to be when I grow up”. That´s a whole other blog post and I´m not sure I´ll ever definitively answer the question, but one of the ideas that I often consider is to be a teacher. I have always loved the act of tutoring, instructing and helping people to understand something of which I might happen to have a (little) bit more knowledge. It ties in with a little blog project I´ve been working on that hopefully will be up and running soon. In a few jobs I´ve had, there has been some training aspect and I like the idea of passing on knowledge which will then be passed on down the track to someone else. Plus, I´ve always thought school teachers have such a thankless job and they really are the ultimate “pay-it-forwarders” arent they?

So, anyway, to participate in this game, I am going to follow Lightening´s lead and offer to write a post about your blog, as my “gift” to the players of the game (not a review, more of an introduction). I would offer to send you a gift, but I can’t guarantee it would actually make it to you through the Mexican mail system before, oh, 2010 so an online gift is much more reliable. It might be a nice way to get to know a few more bloggers and find a few more readers.

To enter, all you have to do is post a comment and let me know you want to be in the running and I will devise some transparently fair way of selecting 3 winners (Note: it may involve scraps of paper and a hat). Of course, if there´s only 3 comments then everyone wins! The game will stay open for entries until Saturday 19th Jan (my time which gives the Aussies until about midday on Sun) unless I decide to extend :). I you´re a winner, you´ll have to write your own pay it forward post, linking back to this post and then I ´ll write my introduction about your blog.

So, comment away, and I´ll look forward to paying my “gifts” forward!

Pick Me! Pick Me! I rarely win things, although I did win our companies footy tipping this year. Most of my colleagues could not believe it. A haggisbasher gets lucky at footy tipping.

Nice blog design.

I just found your blog via the Aussie Bloggers Forum and I LOVE it!
I spent time in Costa Rica as a teenager and ‘fell in lust’ with a Mexican and have always wanted to visit…. anyway I digress… just wanted to say that I have spent a lovely few minutes reading your blog :)

Welcome all. How cool to have 3 new commenters for this little game! You´re all in with a good chance at the moment since there are only 3 entries ;)

Colin - Classic that you won your footy tipping comp. I bet your Aussie work mates were happy about that! You probably had an advantage because you maybe didn´t know all the intricacies of the game (I´m just guessing, maybe you do?). I reckon the guys can take their tipping a little bit too seriously and they overthink it. I was in a NRL tipping comp at one stage when I was living in NSW. Knew nothing about rugby league so my tips were based on whether a Rooster could beat a Tiger or an Eel in a fight. I got the wooden spoon.

Katef - I was looking at your site the other day. I love the design and love all the digital scrapping stuff! Gorgeous. I am assuming you want in on the Pay it Forward game, let me know if you don´t

A Maybus - not sure what happened with your address there and that link to your “last blog post” is obviously not from you (last post was 2004!) I have been checking out your blog lately too. I´m loving all these new reads!

Oh, I want t join in the fun too! I haven`t heard of this meme/game…will have to trace it back a couple of people to discover some more great new blogs, such as yours!

The aussie bloggers forum is addictive isn`t it. Last night I fell asleep while trying to clear out my google reader because I just have so many feeds now!

Love your blog, about to check out some of your archives!

Consider yourself joined, Lulu! I have been enjoying your blog - I´d love to go to Japan some day.

Thanks for your kind word about teachers. We have the best job in the world. At the moment anyway… there’s still a week’s worth of holidays to go.

I found you through Lightening’s review. You’re in a great position to be able to see the world while your kids are still portable. And still under 12. (6K to fly myself and my 4 boys to Phuket for a week last year. Only one was considered ‘a child’. I still hyperventilate at the memory.) (But the elephants made it all worthwhile.)

Count me in for the pay it forward thing. Why not? I’m off to read some more of your blog. Maybe I’ll save up and take the boys to Mexico….

I will join in the fun too - I think we can use new friends more than material things unless it is chocolate and wrapped in pretty foil.
I have seen you around the forums and on a few blogs.
I like your blog.

How exciting! I´ll actually get to use my very technical picking out of a hat technique for choosing the winners!! Welcome Trish (again) and Frogdancer - your blogs are already on my list of new blogs I am loving, so I am really going to enjoy doing my intros to whoever “wins” the game - they are all blogs I have recently found and been enjoying :)
