A Special Kind of Hell
Is how I would describe jet lag with young children.
We’re finally home but it could take a week to fully recover from the holiday!
Here’s a snapshot of our last few days:
- Arrive LA around midday Thursday (LA time) on delayed plane and miss connection. Get to airport hotel around 2.30pm feeling pissed off and spaced out. Have lunch about 4pm.
- 6.30pm - the kids fall asleep. We potter around until 8pm when we go to bed, feeling utterly exhausted. 10 minutes later, Chiq wakes up, fresh as a daisy and ready to play! Guerita soon follows.
- Decide to go down to dinner since they are not going back to sleep anytime soon and if we skip dinner we’ll probably wake up hungry at 3am.
- 11.30pm - trying to get the kids back to sleep - Chiq resists until 1am, Guerita till 1.30am!
- 2am - finally get to sleep myself after lying in bed feeling bone tired, yet unable to sleep. I have a lot of sympathy for insomniacs.
- 8am - the alarm goes off (an effort to force ourselves into a normal routine). We don’t manage to drag ourselves out of bed until 9.30am.
- Have breakfast, pack up, head off to the airport for our flight. Finally get home at 5pm. Instead of 17 hours, it took us 44 hours to get home.
- Have dinner, bath kids; they are asleep by 7.30pm. This is looking good - back in the normal routine!
- Spend the next few hours washing and getting Rocky ready for his 6.15am flight to Canada the next day!!
- Fall into bed at 10.30pm.
- Kids wake up at 11pm. Guerita says “Is it morning yet?”
- Chiq finally back to sleep at 1am. Guerita tosses and turns in our bed till 1.30am. I lie awake dreaming up blog posts about hellish jet lag until 2am. (You see a pattern here?)
- Rocky gives up on sleep altogether since the taxi is coming at 4.30am.
- I don’t set the alarm, figuring the kids and I will sleep in to try and get out of sleep deficit.
- Chiq wakes up at 8.30am.
So, I’m up. I feel like death warmed up. Rocky’s in transit in Mexico City or Dallas or somewhere - he’s had about 30 minutes sleep in 48 hours, but at least tonight his sleep will be uninterrupted. Guerita is still asleep at 10.30am and I can’t decide whether to wake her up or let her sleep. Chiq is falling asleep over her vegemite toast. Maybe we should just all go back to bed…

(((HUGS))) Babe. I think you’re well entitled to a little bit of a “poor me” post or two. It sounds really tough! And it’s a bugger when you planned it so you wouldn’t be alone and the airlines stuffed that up.
Hope things improve quickly. In the meantime - be kind to yourself!!!!

Ugh - I totally remember the airline delays/cancelations from our own trip. I can’t imagine the jetlag (and 2 kids) on top of it all - I hope you are able to get some rest. Looking forward to reading about the trip when you recover . . . .
