The Odd Ones Out Revealed!

by guera in Blogging on 1 May, 2008

Yesterday I posted my 8 random facts with a twist meme and asked you to guess which one of the facts was not true and the bonus question of which subject I didn’t study at university.

That was fun!!

It was really interesting seeing your guesses and your reasons why you guessed what you did. Almost all of you were half right, so maybe my odd-one-out false fact was a bit too obvious…

If you said that fact #6 (I have climbed Mt Kilimanjaro) was the odd one out then you would be correct!

It might seem like a strange false fact to put in, but it was on my mind because my baby brother and his wife actually did climb it a few weeks ago. In fact he celebrated his 31st birthday at the summit! Not only that but my mother in law has climbed it too!

It’s not something that has always been on my list of things to do, but I think it would be awesome. I would need to do A LOT of fitness training to manage it though. I have flown over it when we went on safari in the Serengeti and it looks beautiful…maybe one day!

Treetop WalkFor those of you who said it was because of my fear of heights - well, not quite. I don’t really have a fear of being at the top of a tall mountain, which is why skiing down one is exhilarating not terrifying, but I don’t like that situation where you are on some sort of structure, like a staircase or gondola platform and you can look down or over the edge to see a sheer drop.

You know the Treetop Walk in Walpole, WA?

It FREAKED me out! I had to run from platform to platform because I couldn’t handle the wobbling bridge.

Anyway, so back to the random facts…

    1. I am the only member of my childhood family (Mum, Dad & brothers) born in WA and the only member of my adult family (husband & children) born in Australia

Yep - that’s true. I am the odd one out (pun intended) in my family.

    2. I once kissed an Australian Test Cricketer

Also true and no, I’m not going to tell you who!
What do you think this is - New Idea???? Surprised

I will tell you this - it was way before he was a test cricketer, we were both still in high school and it was only one kiss! If you are really that interested you could probably work it out with a bit of research…. (And no, he does not have a habit of sending text messages - ewwww!)

    3. I am scared of heights, even though I love skiing and have to spend lots of time on chairlifts and gondolas to do that.

      True - see above

    4. I have lived in 7 countries and 15 houses in my life

Also true - I have lived in Australia, Fiji, Canada, UK, France, Saudi Arabia and Mexico

    5. I was in one of 2 teams representing Australia in a university competition held in the US

True - we were part of an International Mooting competition and we came second in the world!

Which is a nicer way of saying we lost the final (13 years later and I still don’t like to think about that!)

The finals were held in the UN building in New York which was awesome and petrifying.

    6. I have climbed Mt Kilimanjaro

      FALSE!

    7. I am a Gemini (the twins) and have a cousin with the same birthday as me (so we call ourselves twin cousins born 5 years apart)

True - my Aunt went into labour early, after attending my 5th birthday party

    8. And a bonus “odd-one-out” within the “odd-one-out” - which of these subjects did I NOT study at university
      • Law
      • French
      • Maths
      • Commerce
      • Italian

Tiff was the only person who got this right by saying I didn’t study commerce!!! I didn’t think this would be the one that stumped everyone so much!

I did in fact study French, Italian and Maths (in first year Arts).

A very strange combination, I know but some were chosen for interest (French and Italian) and others (Maths) because I did the easiest class to get a high mark in order to get into:

        Law

At my university (back in “my day” - it’s all changed now) you had to do a year in another degree before applying to Law. You could then chose to transfer into straight Law or continue with both degrees and do a double degree (could be Arts, Science, Commerce etc). I enjoyed the languages so much I ended up doing a combined Arts/Law degree majoring in French and minoring in Italian.

Funny though, Law was always going to be my career and the languages were just a hobby. Well, I worked as a lawyer for 5 years before escaping 8 years ago to go off travelling the world with my new husband. Now it’s those languages I’m using much more than the law!

Well, I hope that was at least mildly interesting for you! I certainly enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to seeing what the tag-ees come up with if they choose to do the odd-one-out twist!

P.S. We’re off tomorrow for a long weekend away - a few hours south to a traditional colonial town. Lots of photos to come!!!
